Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee enquiry into dance, 2004

The Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) Select Committee invited written submissions from interested parties and suggested the areas below for consideration. The NCA submitted a response in April 2004.

Current situation

  • The state of the dance economy, infrastructure and built environment.
  • The economic prospects for dance and the relationship between public and commercial investment.
  • The benefits of dance as a sporting activity and the degree to which these are recognised.

Public policy and investment

  • How public policy and investment have influenced the development of dance as an art form in the UK.
  • The effectiveness of Arts Council England in developing and implementing policies and investment.
  • The level of public investment in dance.
  • The effect on dance funding of Government interest in 'active lifestyles'.

Young people and dance

  • The opportunities and support for the inclusion of young people in dance and their development.
  • The role of dance in education.
