The arts and international development If British culture is to remain relevant to global society, it needs to be able to develop with reference to the work of artists from other cultural backgrounds. To this end, the NCA took a delegation of artists to meet the Arts Minister, Alan Howarth, in 1999, to discuss issues relating to the international development of British art. Delegates described how the high calibre of the British arts sector is recognised and appreciated throughout the world with subsidised and commercial companies in the performing arts touring extensively on the international stage. They explained the need for support for artists working internationally and the difficulties which they face in terms of financial resources, anomalies and complications in taxation systems and sometimes racial discrimination. These need to be addressed if British artists are to continue extend cultural understanding, at home and abroad, through their work.
