A 2008 review stated that dance provision in English schools was underfunded compared to music. Music provision was supported by £59 million per annum from the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Dance was defined as one of six strands of physical education so the funding figure was low, and not precisely quantifiable.

In 2005-06, 43% of revenue generated by Art Council England's (ACE) regularly funded dance organisations came from the Arts Council's contribution, the third highest percentage by art-form after visual arts (47%) and service and umbrella arts organisations (48%). Subsidy per individual attendance was £18.61, higher than average, due to the relatively small audiences at dance events.

In 2006 Youth Music was receiving around £10 million a year. Youth Dance England was receiving around £100,000.

In 1946, when the Arts Council was formed, it funded 33 dance companies. By 2005 it funded 82 on a regular basis, three of which were classical ballet based.
