By 2005-06 self-generated income to museums and galleries had been as high as £200 million a year and total income had risen from £484,362 in 1997-98 to £692,565. Funding in the regions had increased from £9,073 to £57,940.Â

Spending on museum and gallery acquisitions fell from £30,706 in 1997-98 to £22,906 in 2005-06. Internationally, the Metropolitan and J Paul Getty Museums in the USA and the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands spent the most on acquisitions. These museums spent over £16 million between 2001 and 2004 compared to the UK's biggest purchaser, the National Gallery, which spent approximately £12 million.
