Press release - 8 September 2004 Joan Bakewell to head up arts campaign Renowned broadcaster Joan Bakewell was today announced as the new Chairperson of the National Campaign for the Arts (NCA). A long-term advocate of the arts and founder member of the NCA, Joan takes over from Stewart Steven who sadly died earlier this year. She will begin her work in this position immediately. The NCA and its board were determined to find somebody who embodies all the values and aspirations of their organisation to take on the challenging but rewarding position of Chairperson. As a knowledgeable, passionate and active supporter of the arts Joan amply satisfies these requirements. Her media experience and political engagement are also highly valued by the NCA. Her acceptance of the Chair marks the beginning of a new era for the organisation. Joan Bakewell said, "I am very excited about taking on the Chairmanship of the NCA. My association with the early days of the NCA, going back to its very origins, gives me a certain sense of its purpose. The NCA is unique in its role as the only independent organisation representing all the arts. I look forward to joining the Board in promoting the case for the arts with vigour and enthusiasm, especially in the build-up to the election." Victoria Todd, Director of the NCA, said, "We are delighted that Joan Bakewell has agreed to become Chairperson of the NCA. She brings with her a great deal of experience in the arts. I am very excited about what we will achieve together and look forward to working with her". The National Campaign for the Arts President, Lord Bragg, is extremely encouraged by this news. He says "I'm delighted that Joan has agreed to take on this job. Her experience in broadcasting, in film and across the arts has been substantial, impressive and successful. I've no doubt she'll do a fantastic job for the NCA and the arts in this country."
