Press release - 19 May 2003

Sir James Galway, Evelyn Glennie and Julian Lloyd-Webber to meet Charles Clarke, Secretary of State for Education on 20 May 2003 to discuss music in education.

Sir James Galway, Evelyn Glennie and Julian Lloyd-Webber will be meeting Charles Clarke, Secretary of State for education at a meeting facilitated by the National Campaign for the Arts (NCA) on Tuesday (20 May 2003).

The artists will voice their concerns about the state of music education and call on the Secretary of State to clarify the Government's pledge on the provision of instrumental tuition to every child that wishes to learn a musical instrument.

In addition, the artists will propose ways of increasing access to classical music events and outline their plans for increasing co-operation between the government and individual artists so that more can be done to highlight the importance of music to the educational attainment and enjoyment of children.

The timing of the meeting coincides with the release of the Government's new Primary Education Strategy.
